Fabio Capello gave an interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport in which he commented on Roma 's second-half defeat to Manchester United : " In the first half, Roma dominated the game, dominating everything: aggression, ball recovery, threat, and vision. It seemed like an easy match; United had never threatened. Roma, however, were well-positioned, alert, and quick to counterattack to take advantage of their disarray."
The former Giallorossi coach on the comeback: "The question is: did Roma think it was all too easy and went in relaxed? In the second half, they didn't do anything, they didn't play, and they never had a shot on goal. It looked like they'd swapped shirts, it's true."
Capello on the changes between the first and second half: "United improved a lot thanks to the substitutions, but above all, they discovered an aggressiveness that is typical of Roma. The Giallorossi aren't used to facing such aggressive teams; you don't find opponents like that in Italy. And on Tuesday, Roma showed some flaws in their mentality, concentration, and energy. And then I also wonder: did Gasperini's men overextend themselves in the first half? The intensity of English football made the difference."
Capello: "Roma are showing exciting things, but Gasperini's football is wasteful."
Fabio Capello continued his analysis of Gasperini's football: "That's a very demanding style of football, but also very beautiful. Roma shows exciting things, which is an advantage for Italian football. But when you then go up against players who have certain characteristics, it's clear that it's difficult to last long. Concentration is a very important thing."
The former Giallorossi coach on the comparison between Roma's comeback against Real Madrid and the one at Old Trafford: "But we knew that if you give the Spanish side 15-20 minutes, they'll punish you right away. In Manchester, however, the impression was one of general tiredness; United weren't that exceptionally good. And perhaps that was also the moral key to the match."
For Capello, the Champions League defeat is part of a journey: "First of all, let's say there's disappointment. Roma came close to securing two victories they deserved. And yet, you find yourself with zero points, and we need to understand why this happened. But these defeats are part of a journey. What Roma showed against Real Madrid and United can't be erased. And they didn't do it against a Serie B team, but against European powerhouses."
